Katherine Matthews O’Briant, 96, died November 3, 2018, a day before turning 97 at her home in Roxboro. Born November 4, 1921, to Katie Spivey Matthews and Lonnie Turner Matthews, Katherine was passionate about teaching, flowers, playing bridge and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years John Archibald O’Briant, who passed away April 19, 2007. The two of them were happily married June 12, 1946, and enjoyed traveling and playing golf together.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, James Clifford Matthews, Earl Turner Matthews and Lonnie “LT” Turner Matthews, Jr., and her sisters Doris Carver and Geraldine Tyren.

Katherine is survived by her two children Katherine O’Briant Hester and John Archibald O’Briant, II, her son-in-law B. Earl Hester, Jr., and daughter-in-law Bonnie Wade O’Briant. She also has four grandchildren Elizabeth Brooks Hester, Margaret Ann Hester, Jonathan Wade O’Briant and Jennifer Anne O’Briant.

Katherine grew up in Durham and graduated in 1940 from Durham High School. She was a proud alumna of Duke University class of 1944 where she earned an education degree. She taught elementary school in Durham and Roxboro until she retired in 1983.

As a charter member of the Roxboro Garden Club founded in 1953, Katherine loved growing and arranging flowers, especially roses. She loved to play bridge and enjoyed a weekly game well into her 90s.

Katherine taught Sunday school and was a circle leader as a 50-year member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church. She was also an avid golfer, playing at Roxboro Country Club alongside John.

Her remains will rest alongside John’s in the columbarium at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro. The memorial service will be 2 pm Monday, November 12, 2018, at Long Memorial. Visitation will be one hour before the memorial service at the church.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers for their love, patience and care over the last several years.
