Francis Hugh “Cotton” Powell, 98, of 140 Forrestwood Drive, Roxboro, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 12 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 3, 1920 in Roanoke Rapids, he was the son of the late Rufus and Nancy Crisp Powell. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters Ollie Williams and Hughlo P. Davis, and a brother, Graham I. “Shorty” Powell.

Mr. Powell was a lifetime member of Ca-Vel Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board and several committees. He was a World War II veteran who served from 1942 to 1945 as Staff Sergeant in the 57th Signal Company. After returning from World War II, he served as Postmaster at the Ca-Vel and North Roxboro post offices before his retirement in 1984. Cotton was the starting shortstop for the 1946 Durham Bulls and played in the Army with Joe DiMaggio and other major leaguers.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years Doris Dickerson Powell, sister, Mary King of Roxboro, children, daughter, Francelle Crumpton of Roxboro and son, Joel W. Powell and wife, Susan of Hyco Lake. Known to his family as Papa, he is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert Powell (Jacqueline) of Fuquay, NC, Caroline Powell of Pensacola, Fl., Will Crumpton and Blair Crumpton (David Newell) of Roxboro and four great-grandchildren, Haley Crumpton, Davi Newell, Mia Frances Powell and Charli Grace Powell. The Powell family sincerely thanks Roberta Powell and Tina Walker, his caregivers. Duke Hospice and Amanda Hamill, Drs. Niharika Mettu and Mitchell Heflin, for their dedication to Papa’s care.

The visitation will be held at Brooks and White Funeral Home on Saturday, September 15, 6-7:30 pm. The funeral service will be held at Brooks and White Funeral Home on Sunday, September 16 at 2pm with the Reverends Darcy Knight and Ross Thompson officiating, followed by burial at Burchwood Cemetery in Roxboro.

Pallbearers will be Robert Powell, Will Crumpton, David Newell, Larry King, Randy King, and Mark Crumpton. Honorary pallbearer is Charles Dickerson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Person County Museum of History, 309 N. Main Street, Roxboro, NC 27573 where Cotton served as a docent for many years or Grace/ Ca-Vel United Methodist Church, 313 Church Street, Roxboro, NC 27573.
