James William Winter, Jr., 85, of Roxboro, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 8. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carolyn Winter; three stepchildren, Terri A. Cook of Augusta, GA; Ernest Lawrence Cook, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; and Richard N. Cook and wife Tammy Blackard of Raleigh, NC; two step grandchildren, Lucy Blackard Cook and Sarah Elizabeth Blackard Cook, of Raleigh; and his sister Jan Rowe and niece Diana Sapp both of California.

Mr. Winter served honorably in three branches of the military. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950 serving aboard the USS Mispillion AO-105 during the Korean War. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1954, serving on various bases in the U.S., and finally enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962, serving in Germany and Vietnam. He retired from the military at Fort Gordon, Georgia in 1971.

He lived in Augusta, GA for many years. He worked in the Engineering Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital from 1972 to 1986, and the Medical College of Georgia until 1988. Mr. Winter was an avid motorcyclist, RV enthusiast, traveler, and accomplished ballroom and Western-style dancer.

In 2004, he and Carolyn moved to North Carolina to enjoy their two grandchildren. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Timberlake, NC where he faithfully attended Sunday School and Bible Studies. He loved his Lord, his family, and his church family.

Services will be at Antioch Baptist Church Thursday, May 10. Visitation will begin at 11 am with services at 12 noon with the Dr. M. David Chambers officiating. Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Mission Fund, 677 Antioch Church Road, Timberlake, NC 27583.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Watson, John Byrd, David Bunch, Marcus Jordan, Glenn Newsome, Jr., and David Rogerson. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Antioch Baptist Church and the Men's Breakfast Group.
