James Arnold Ashley, 83 of 539 White Oak Drive, Roxboro, died Monday, January 29, 2018 at his home. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Roy Ashley and Effie James Ashley.

Arnold, as everyone called him, graduated from Roxboro High School and Appalachian State University with a degree in Business Administration. Mr. Ashley served in the United States Army.

Arnold was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church where he served as an usher. He was also the original chairman of the Joe Wright Memorial Fund. He was a charter and long standing life member of the Roxboro Optimist Club. He served in many offices within the club and served as District Lieutenant governor in the past. Arnold believed strongly in the foundations of the Optimist Club mission that "giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world." He also embraced the Optimist Motto as "friend of youth" in other aspects of his life. This was evident in his service as a life long member on the Person County Recreation Advisory Board and Athletic Committee for Parks and Recreation.

Arnold was a probation and parole officer for years. For almost the last forty years he has owned the Handi Cupboard. Arnold loved the store and loved his customers. His other greatest passions were baseball and the Roxboro Optimist Park.

For years, he served as the North Carolina Baseball Commissioner and Tournament Director for the National Baseball Congress in Wichita, KS. In 1993, he received the Raymond Hap Dumont Award for his contribution to the National Baseball Congress. In 2007, he was inducted into the National Baseball Congress Hall of Fame.

He enjoyed traveling to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, KS with the team representing North Carolina for years.

Arnold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Berry Ashley and his daughter, Twyla Ashley-Cates and son-in-law, Scott Cates and grand-fur baby, Graycee.

Visitation will be held 1:30-3 PM Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Roxboro Baptist Church and other times at the Handi Cupboard (2932 Durham Road, Roxboro) per his request.

Funeral service will be 3 PM Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Roxboro Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Ray Newton, Ronnie Roberts, Doug Thorpe, Blaire Harrell, Matt Benfer, Froncello Bumpass and Wesley Strader. Honorary pallbearers will be the Employees of the Handi Cupboard, current and former member of the Roxboro Optimist Club and members of the Person County Recreation Advisory Board and Athletic Committee for Parks & Recreation.
