Freda Mae Steele was born August 12, 1923 in Lewis County, West Virginia to the late James Albert "Bruce" Hayes and Ruby Hitt Hayes.

After graduating Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV, Freda taught school in a one room school in rural Lewis County, and in several Clarksburg elementary schools. During her years in Clarksburg, she actively shared her love for the Lord through her involvement at the Church of Our Savior where she taught and preached when needed. During this time she was also instrumental in starting a local Youth for Christ ministry.

Following her brother to Kansas she once again taught in a one room school before marrying her husband, Ervin Steele. She interrupted her career by taking a short break to start a family, but happily resumed teaching elementary school where it was her joy to instill the love of reading and writing in the children in her classes.

After 30 years of teaching school she was called to change vocations and became a United Methodist Minister is rural Kansas. She loved sharing Christ with all in word and music, but missed her extended family and then the mountains of West Virginia. Returning there, she pastored several small churches in the Huntington, WV area until she eventually retired. Retirement didn't last long though and she continued to fill in at churches where ever she lived as long as her health would allow.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin I. Steele, of Lawrence, KS, her sister, Lorene Wood and husband, Richard, of Naples, FL and sister, Rachel Hall Hines and husband, Sam Hines of Timberlake, NC and nephew, Bruce Hall of Timberlake, NC.

Surviving are her brother, Robert Hayes of Huntington, WV; daughter, Mary Lou Steele of Hickory, NC; son, James I. Steele (wife, Rhonda) of Randolph, Kansas and son, Scott Steele of Lawrence, Kansas. In addition she has five grandchildren, Chad Steele, Stephanie Steele Avery, Morgan Steele, Katie Steele, and Cooper Steele.

Memorial service will be held 1 PM Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Richard Long officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Red Bird Mission, 70 Queendale Center, Beverly, KY 40913.
