Robert "Bobby Dee" Walker, 86, died Saturday, December 2, 2017 after a brief illness at Duke Hospital. He was born April 15, 1931 in Roxboro to the late Platt Dee and Etta Harris Walker. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Walker Laws and her husband, Ben.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Merri White Walker. In addition is their son, Joel B. Walker and wife, Joyce; two grandchildren: Jimmy Simpson and wife, Jackie and Melissa W. McLawhorn and husband, Joseph; three great-grandchildren: Austin J. Simpson, Jackson W. McLawhorn and Caroline J. McLawhorn, all from Roxboro; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bobby Dee was a graduate of Bethel Hill School in 1950. He was of the Baptist faith.

Shortly after high school, he voluntarily joined the US Army. Upon completion of his basic training, he served on the front lines of the Korean War with his unit, Company K 279th Regiment 45th Infantry Division 6th Army. After his tour of duty in Korea, he returned stateside and served as a Military Police Sergeant at Fort Lewis, Washington and the surrounding area. He was then transferred to the Army Firing Center in Yakima, Washington. He was in charge of the military police. He met his wife, Merri at a USO Dance and after being discharged they were married and returned to North Carolina.

He was very proud to be a veteran and to have served his county. He enjoyed sharing his war stories and experiences while serving in the Army. Once returning home five Army buddies known as the "5 W's" remained good friends throughout the years to follow. He later became a life member of the local VFW Post 2058.

With a strong work ethic, he gave many years of service to Collins & Aiken, Crown Aluminum, RPC, Hunter Douglas, Steinthal and Piedmont Maintenance and Services. After 11 years of service, Bobby Dee retired as the plant engineer at Tultex Yarns, Longhurst Plant here in Roxboro. He was well versed in all aspects of industrial electrical, construction and maintenance. His expertise allowed him to travel to many destinations both domestic and abroad. He also repaired electronics, radios and TV's in his home shop for many many years.

Outside of his work and the love of his family, his biggest hobby was the love and appreciation of music. At the age of 14, he started his journey as a musician. Through the years he became a well known Double Neck Steel Guitar player. If the instrument had strings, he could play it. His talents allowed him to be a part of many country music bands and played across the state of North Carolina and Virginia. He was no stranger to the Pick & Bow, the American Legion, VFW and many other music halls.

As a community volunteer, Bobby became a charter member and joined the Loyal Order of Moose at the Roxboro Moose Lodge #2005. He will be truly missed by all of the Lodge members.

Above all, Bobby Dee's greatest love was his family. Our hearts will be saddened for he was loved and will be truly missed by all.

Visitation will be held from 6-8:30 PM on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of Joel & Joyce Walker (649 Lacy Wilkerson Road, Roxboro, NC 27574).
