Matilda Mae Massengill Batten, 86, of 132 Berry Dr., Timberlake, died Sunday, January 15, 2017. Born in Johnston County, Mrs. Batten was the daughter of the late George and Flonnie Mae Massengill and wife of the late Erwin Batten. Mrs. Batten was a certified professional secretary, retiring from Verizon. She was a member of the Durham Secretaries for over 30 years and was an honorary member of the NC Retired Peace Officers Association. Mrs. Batten was a former officer with the Salvation Army and was the author of the book "My Heart to Yours". She was a wonderful and loving sister and friend to everyone.

Mrs. Batten is survived by two sisters, Donna Pearce, of Durham and Jean Sayer, of Houston, TX and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2PM Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Somerset Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Gearhart. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1-2PM Saturday at Somerset Baptist Church prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Glenn, Jack Smith, Chad Smith, Wayne Massengill, L. G. Fields, and Dennis Morgan.

The family would like to express their thanks for the outstanding services provided by Duke Hospice and Mrs. Batten's caregivers, friends, and church family.
