James Finley Blankenship, Sr., 89, of 309 Reams Avenue, Roxboro, died Monday, December 26, 2016 at his home. Born in Tyler County, WV, to the late Harold Raymond Blankenship and Anna Estola Jordan Blankenship. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Anne Hewitt Blankenship; one son, James Finley Blankenship, Jr.; three brothers; three sisters. Mr. Blankenship was a Navy Veteran having served on the SS Frances M. Robinson. He was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Blankenship brought his family to Roxboro in 1965 to build the first 400 foot smoke stack chimney at CP&L Hyco Plant as well as the last 800 foot smoke stack while working with Rust Engineering & Kellogg Construction Company. After retirement, he worked for Kelly Carver Brick Mason. He was a private pilot and enjoyed flying. Mr. Blankenship loved doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

Surviving are his children: Carolyn Blankenship Hicks (C.T.), Frederick Ray Blankenship (Pam), and Sharon Lynn Blankenship, all of Roxboro; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Blankenship of Durham; companion, Doris Sadler of Weirton, WV; one sister, Jeanette Loar (Russell) of Chester, WV; five grandchildren: James Finley Blankenship III, Jessie Blankenship, Dwight Solomon, Jr., Douglas Solomon, and "Dusty" Frederick Ray Blankenship, Jr.; eleven great-grandchildren: Kennan Solomon, Sienna Blankenship, Colin Solomon, Madison Solomon, Cole Solomon, Serenity Faith Solomon, Levi McKinney, Jeffery Lam, Trinity Lam, August James Blankenship, and Luke McKinney.

Funeral service will be 2 PM Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the Long Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Nash officiating. Burial will follow in the Burchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (1-2 PM) and other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be Matt Solomon, Clyde "Peaches" Solomon, David Solomon, Ray Kirby, Ray Clayton, and Ray Shannon. Honorary pallbearers will be Kennan and Colin Solomon.
