Elmo Slaughter, 96, of Roxboro, NC died Monday morning December 26, 2016 after a period of declining health.

He was born January 15, 1920 in Person County, NC. His parents were Della M. & Moses T. Slaughter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by wife, Betty B. Slaughter, step-mother Lila K. Slaughter, daughter Kay Richards, grandson Timothy Dwayne Slaughter, sisters Nellie Averett and Christine Rogers, and brother Hubert Yarborough.

He is survived by son Stanley Slaughter (Debbie), granddaughters Heather Richards Wall (Andy), Amy Slaughter Thorneloe (David), and Krystina Richards, grandson Nicholas Richards, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Henry Slaughter (Hazel) and Paul Slaughter.

Elmo was always proud of the work he did in the shipyards in Wilmington during WWII building Liberty Ships. After WWII, while living in Durham, NC, with his wife Betty, he worked as Maintenance Shop Foreman for W.L. Roberson/JP Taylor Tobacco Companies. Retiring at age 62, Elmo enjoyed 34 years of retirement. He and Betty saw a space shuttle launch in Florida and enjoyed going to their NC beach home to go fishing. They also went on vacations with their son, Stanley, and his family, including Texas and Niagara Falls.

Elmo always had a vegetable garden and enjoyed tending it on his Farmall Cub tractor. It was always a large garden which he would share with others.

With passing of time and needing more assistance, Elmo and Betty moved back to Person County with his son and daughter-in-law in 2006. He chose to move back, saying, I want to die where I was born and grew up. He was a member of Rock Grove Baptist Church in Roxboro, the church he grew up attending.

The family wishes to thank the Canterbury House and Liberty Hospice staff for their care of Elmo these last 3 years.

Funeral services will be at 2pm Saturday December 31, 2016 at Brooks and White Funeral Home, with visitation 1 hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Rock Grove Baptist Church Building fund are requested (Rock Grove Baptist Church 3190 Allensville Rd Roxboro, NC 27574).
